Specializations
Head and Neck Oncologic Surgery
Prof. Adam Maciejewski has for many years specialized in the treatment of head and neck cancers, including cancers of the oral cavity, tongue, pharynx, larynx, salivary glands, paranasal sinuses, and skin. In his practice, he combines radical oncologic treatment with a focus on the best possible reconstruction and functional rehabilitation.
Reconstructive and Microsurgical Surgery
He is one of the pioneers of reconstructive microsurgery in Poland. He performs extensive soft tissue and bony reconstructions after major oncologic operations, traffic accidents, and post-traumatic and amputation injuries. He employs modern microvascular anastomosis techniques to restore function and aesthetics.
Maxillofacial and Orthognathic Surgery
He provides comprehensive treatment of maxillofacial deformities—congenital, post-traumatic, and disease-acquired. He performs corrective bite surgery, manages post-traumatic facial fractures, and conducts bony reconstructions in cases of tumors and bone loss.
Reconstructive Plastic Surgery
He performs procedures to restore appearance and function after oncologic treatment, trauma, or congenital deformities, including tissue transplantation, free flaps, and complex reconstructions using microsurgery.
Reconstructions after Cancer, Trauma, and Amputations
He specializes in comprehensive reconstructions following extensive oncologic resections and post-traumatic amputations, restoring patients’ ability to function and improving quality of life.
Management of Recurrent Cancers
Prof. Maciejewski has extensive experience in treating recurrent cancers, which require individualized therapeutic approaches, multistage operations, and often advanced reconstructive techniques.

Research and international activity:
Prof. Adam Maciejewski conducts intensive research in reconstructive surgery and microsurgery, focusing on restoring vital functions and aesthetics after extensive oncologic resections.
His research includes:
development of innovative microsurgical reconstruction methods,
organ transplantation within the head and neck region,
implementation of novel protocols for multistage treatment.
He collaborates with leading surgical centers worldwide, sharing knowledge and experience through international conferences and research projects.
Key clinical achievements:
2013 (May): The first in Poland—and simultaneously the world’s first life-saving—face transplant. A 27-hour operation was performed under Prof. Maciejewski’s leadership in a patient after severe trauma, transplanting a face from a deceased donor. The operation entered history as a pioneering transplantation performed for urgent, life-saving indications.
2013 (December): The second face transplant in Poland, planned for a female patient. Prof. Maciejewski led the team that again transplanted the entire facial tissue, restoring function and appearance.
2015: The world’s first allogeneic, composite transplantation of neck organs (including the larynx, trachea, pharynx, esophagus, and thyroid with parathyroids, as well as neck muscles and the anterior neck integument), performed together with stem-cell transplantation. This unique breakthrough in transplantation and reconstruction restored breathing and swallowing functions.
Beyond transplantation, Prof. Maciejewski is the author of numerous innovative reconstructive techniques (e.g., modifications of the thigh flap, fibular flap, and tri-island tissue transfers), for which he has received national and international awards.
